The new weapons in Doom: The Dark Ages
The trailer sees the Doom Slayer equipping himself with his iconic Super Shotgun and a shield before being launched from a space station(?) to a medieval planet under a demonic invasion. He then begins killing the unholy invaders using the shotgun as well as another weapon, the ‘Skull Crusher,’ which crushes skulls to pieces and fires them at demons.

Other demon-slaying toys include the Shield Saw, which is a shield that can be revved up like a chainsaw, launched to cut through enemies and return to the Slayer, a flail, and a gun that can impale enemies and stick them to walls. New additions to the core Doom gameplay include being able to block projectiles and parry enemy attacks with the shield, as well as being able to kick demons, some familiar and some unfamiliar.
IGN was told by Hugo Martin, the Studio Creative Director at Id Software, that the game will be a “medieval war against Hell” at IGN Live. Martin also told GameSpot that they started from the ground up to rebuild the combat loop and that Doom: The Dark Ages will feel like “a return to form” since much of the gameplay will be on the ground, which contrasts Doom Eternal as the Slayer could easily move around while in the air. The Creative Director likened the Eternal version of the Slayer to an F-22 fighter jet, whereas The Dark Ages version of the character will be like an Abrams tank.
On-foot combat won’t be the only way to wipe out demons. The Slayer will also be able to pilot an ‘Atlan,’ a “daunting skyscraper-sized mech capable of toppling Hell’s behemoths with titanic metal fists” and the hero’s ‘Mecha Dragon.’ which comes equipped with jet engines and has “overwhelming firepower.”
The story and the PS5 port
The game will serve as a prequel to the 2016 Doom game and Doom Eternal and will allow players to “experience the epic cinematic origin story of the Doom Slayer’s rage.” Martin and Executive producer Marty Stratton said that Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal both called back to this period of the Slayer’s life and that The Dark Ages will be about the events mentioned through lore entries in those games.
As for why Doom: The Dark Ages is coming to the PS5, IGN questioned Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer on that. Spencer replied that Doom was “definitely one of those franchises that has a history of so many platforms” and because of that, everyone deserves to play the games in this series. The reason why this was asked is that four Xbox exclusive games (Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded) were ported to other gaming platforms, some to the Nintendo Switch and all to the PS5, earlier this year. Because of Microsoft’s decision, rumors are floating around that other Xbox games like Halo may be coming to other platforms.
Doom: The Dark Ages will be ripping and tearing its way onto PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S sometime in 2025.
