It’ll soon be (nap)time to enter the dreams of Smurfs and rescue them before Gargamel arrives in The Smurfs – Dreams.

What is The Smurfs – Dreams about?

the smurfs 2021

I guess if a franchise is profitable, they’ll make anything involving its characters. A brand-new Smurfs game, The Smurfs – Dreams, is being developed by Ocellus Services and is going to be released sometime this year.

The trailer for the game explains that it’s a platformer where you and a buddy can control the tiny blue creatures as they explore “a universe where dreams and nightmares collide,” with the protagonists hopping, skipping, and jumping across 12 levels and 16 mini-levels. The game’s website also says each dream will be a unique gameplay experience with its own distinct gameplay. You’ll even be able to grind on railings like a certain blue hedgehog does, as well as alter your Smurf’s outfit by collecting magic orbs and boss tokens. I wonder if there’ll be a Smurf fashion community on Reddit where you can show off your drip to other players after the game releases.

The narrative involves Gargamel (a nefarious wizard that loathes the Smurfs) casting a spell on sarsaparilla leaves, which the Smurfs then devour, resulting in the blue creatures falling asleep, now trapped within their dreams. You play as one of the Smurfs who’s now tasked with invading the dreams and nightmares of your brethren to awaken them before Gargamel reaches Smurf village. These dreams hide nightmares involving each Smurf’s fear, so the main character will need to help them overcome those fears by way of boss fights, puzzles, and other surprises the game has in store.

No release date has been given, but the Smurfs – Dreams will be available on PS5, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.

What is The Smurfs franchise?

the smurfs tv show characters

Born from the mind of Pierre Culliford (aka Peyo), a Belgian comic artist, The Smurfs started as a comic series before becoming more popular thanks to a cartoon show that debuted in the eighties. It centers on The Smurfs, small blue creatures that live in their hidden village, that regularly stop the evil schemes of Gargamel and Azrael, a wizard and cat, respectively.

With a few exceptions, most Smurfs look very similar to each other, with all of them wearing white hats and pants along with having different personalities and traits (you see “lazy designs”, I see “time-saving measure.”). For example, Clumsy Smurf is a total klutz, while Gutsy Smurf is lionhearted and Brainy Smurf is the intelligent one. Most Smurfs are also male, though female Smurfs do exist, like Smurfette and Sassette. The leader of this community is Papa Smurf, the only Smurf who wears a cap and pants colored red (the best color) and has a beard.

Since The Smurfs has proven to make bank, there have been video games, toys, a theme park, and even a couple of live-action movies where a few Smurfs, Gargamel, and Azrael traveled to our world. They didn’t go down well with critics but they were profitable, so who cares? Not the suits who greenlit these movies, I’ll bet.
