Attack on Titan: The Final Chapters
Following nearly a decade of anticipation, Attack on Titan has finally reached its long-awaited conclusion with the premiere of Part 2 of The Final Season, titled Attack on Titan: Final Season THE FINAL CHAPTERS Special 2. Produced by MAPPA and directed by Jun Shishido and Yuichiro Hayashi, this series is based on Hajime Isayama’s popular manga published by Kodansha. The voice cast includes Yuki Kaji as Eren, Yui Ishikawa as Mikasa, Marina Inoue as Armin, and Hiroshi Kamiya as Levi.
In the final chapter, the story picks up immediately where the first special left off. Armin, Mikasa, and their remaining allies spring into action to free Eren from Ymir’s control and thwart the Rumbling, which threatens to obliterate humanity’s remnants. Facing insurmountable odds, our heroes confront not only Eren but also an infinite army of Titans.
In Attack on Titan Special 2, Studio MAPPA’s exceptional animation and outstanding voice acting contribute significantly to the overall viewing experience. The studio’s meticulous attention to detail effectively captures a wide range of emotions and actions, from intense and action-packed sequences to moments of reflection and contemplation. The character movements, action scenes, and visual aesthetics enrich the storytelling, immersing the audience in a captivating narrative.
Eren Yeager’s transformation from hero to villain is portrayed with complexity and depth. This evolution is satisfying because it is not abrupt or inexplicable; rather, it stems from Eren’s longstanding traits such as determination, bloodlust, ideals, and inner turmoil, evident since Season 1. Initially, viewers sympathized with Eren’s cause as his anger was directed at anonymous Titans rather than innocent people.
In Special 2, Eren’s motivations behind initiating the Rumbling are revealed. While these revelations don’t excuse his genocidal actions, they offer more context to his destructive choices. This newfound understanding challenges viewers’ preconceived notions of Eren as the series concludes, adding depth to his character and prompting contemplation among the audience.
The deliberate choice to maintain distance between the audience and Eren during significant parts of the last two series segments serves as a strategic storytelling device. By keeping Eren’s character enigmatic and his true motives shrouded in mystery, the narrative creates suspense and intrigue.
Attack on Titan Special 2 brings the series’ central themes, such as freedom, sacrifice, and the cyclical nature of conflict, to the forefront, completing the story circle. These themes, integral since the series’ beginning, gain depth and complexity in this final season, encouraging viewers to contemplate their relevance in the story’s context.
While the ending of Attack on Titan may divide fans expecting a happier resolution, it portrays Mikasa and her comrades living in a relatively peaceful era. The ending credits depict Paradis Eldians advancing technologically but still entangled in conflicts, leading to further destruction. Despite Eren’s defeat and Ymir finding peace, the cycle of violence persists, resulting in the deaths of 80% of the world’s population.
The ending realistically portrays the never-ending cycle following war. Despite Eren’s efforts to level the playing field for the Eldians, leaving only 20% of the outside world and positioning his friends as heroes for peace negotiations, Eldia remains vulnerable to future retaliations. The recurring theme of recovery and conflict continues as society moves uncertainly into the future. This ending leaves audiences questioning if Eren’s intentions were right, albeit through the wrong means, to free and protect his friends, and if he truly mattered in the end.
Attack on Titan: The Final Season THE FINAL CHAPTERS Special 2 exemplifies the series at its peak. Exceptional animation, voice acting, character development, and exploration of central themes create an immersive and thought-provoking experience. Despite the extended format, the special’s quality and storytelling leave a lasting impression on dedicated fans and newcomers, transforming it into a memorable journey.
