The much-awaited showcase of Samsung‘s gadgets took place on January 17 in San Jose, California, where it launched a treasure trove of sleek devices.
To put a final nail in the coffin, Samsung has lured in tech geeks by teasing its latest wearable device- the “Galaxy Ring”. This year’s Unpacked was all about “The Promise of a New Beginning with Galaxy AI,” and true to its theme, Samsung didn’t disappoint.
This innovative session comes as a result of the collaborative partnership between Samsung’s Galaxy AI and Google’s Gemini.

AI Is All The Rage
The fiercest rival Samsung could have in the AI segment of the tech world is Apple. In a game of constant one-upmanship, Samsung’s latest flagship line is certainly a force to behold.
The Galaxy AI is enabled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, a chip Qualcomm that gives you an out-of-universe experience. The features come with every Samsung Galaxy S24 model and are powered by Google’s Gemini family, with the Gemini Nano enabling text-based tools and Gemini Pro for tasks like translating audio. It includes Live Translate, Interpreter, Chat Assist, Note Assist, and Transcript Assist to enhance communication capabilities.
Run-Down of AI Features
- Circle to Search with Google: Previously, long-pressing the home button on Android triggered Google’s voice assistant. On the Galaxy S24, the same action prompts a screen overlay where you can tap or circle an object to perform an image-based Google search. Because the results are presented on top of your existing screen or app, exiting out of the interface simply returns you to where you were at the start.
- Live Translate: Running on-device, you can now hear real-time translations (and see transcriptions of them) when you’re on a phone call. Your recipient will hear you in their spoken language, too.
- Transcript Assist: Galaxy AI can transcribe, translate, and summarize voice memes and text in the Samsung Notes app. To take things further, you can modify how the summary is presented, whether it’s bulleted or written in paragraphs.
- Nightography: For low light photography and processing.
- ProVisual Engine: For AI-powered image capturing.
- Edit Suggestion: For post-capture image processing.
- Generative Edit: Like Google’s Magic Editor, Galaxy AI will let you modify images by long-pressing (or circling) subjects and moving, resizing, or removing them from the background. You can also expand images with generative fill, with Google’s Imagen 2 running in the backend.
- Chat Assist: When you’re unsure of how to appropriately phrase a message, Galaxy AI can provide alternatives in different tonalities, including casual and formal tones.
- Note Assist: To create text summaries, template creation, etc.
The Galaxy S24 Series: Redefining Mobile Intelligence
The powerhouse flagship S24 series (which includes sung Galaxy S24, S24 Plus and the S24 Ultra) proudly displays:
- A mindblowing chipset: At the centre of the handsets is Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. This revolutionizes graphics performance and AI computing.
- The power of Galaxy AI: This advanced engine learns your habits and preferences, personalizing your experience and enhancing camera capabilities. This includes automatic scene optimization, and noise cancellation during calls.
- Camera systems reimagined: Each phone boasts a cutting-edge camera system with larger sensors, brighter lenses, and AI-powered features. The larger pixel sensors enable 2x wider optical image stabilization.
- Sleek and sophisticated designs: The S24 series comes dressed to impress, with durable materials, refined lines, and gorgeous displays that offer vibrant colours and incredible clarity.
The Samsung Ring: A Giant Leap For AI
The South Korean tech giant revealed a tiny teaser of the much-awaited ‘highlight product’, the Galaxy Ring wearable. To the disappointment of spectators, the teaser video only revealed so much about the sleek black outer features of the ring. Played towards the end of the event, it introduces to us the Galaxy Ring with a smooth, circular body in a black shade. The underside of the ring is plush with a number of sensors, which are expected to help with the user’s health and fitness tracking.
The device was claimed to be a “powerful and accessible health and wellness device.” The Galaxy Ring had previously been tipped to be able to track, measure, monitor, and upload health, fitness, and sleep-related data to relevant software. It is on the record that recently, a trademark filing had been claimed to the state. It states that the smart ring would manage and assess “biometric and physiological data, vital signs and personal health records.” It could also tell users to seek medical advice if and when required, based on the required data.
There had been another such leak on the market, setting waves of rumours suggesting that the Samsung Galaxy Ring could be equipped with electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors. Such tempting features have sent the tech world into fits. Hold your horses though, for the company has not yet confirmed these features or any other details of the smart ring. It has not announced a launch timeline for the smart wearable as well. For now, these are all baseless rumours fuelled by daydreams!
It flaunts the following abilities:
- Control your devices with a flick of your finger: From switching apps and making calls to adjusting music volume and controlling your smart home, the ring becomes an extension of your will.
- Stay informed and connected: Discreetly check notifications, receive important alerts, and even answer calls with just a glance at your ring.
- Track your health and fitness: Built-in sensors monitor your steps, heart rate, and sleep, providing valuable insights into your well-being.
- Experience a future of possibilities: The Samsung Ring opens doors to a world where physical and digital interactions become one, paving the way for new and exciting applications we can only begin to imagine.
The Headset: Excluded From The Showcase
In last year’s showcase of Unpacked, Samsung announced an alliance with Qualcomm and Google. Rumours about the release of a premium XR headset began to float about, at a time when Apple’s Vision Pro hadn’t been released.
From the Galaxy S24’s AI-powered photography to the Galaxy AI’s expansion, Samsung is weaving a compelling narrative of a future where technology anticipates our needs.
