Dragon Ball mural created as an incredible tribute to Akira Toriyama

Fans of Akira Toriyama have been paying tributes to the legendary mangaka in their own ways. Artists in Peru have done so by painting a large Dragon Ball mural in La Victoria, Lima.

Over 45 artists have come together to create a 110 meters long, six meters high mural showcasing Akira Toriyama as well as various characters from the world of Dragon Ball, from the Great Ape version of Vegeta to Perfect Cell. The leader of this project is urban graffitti artist Peko, who painted it in Lima’s La Victoria district. He is a member of NFS Crew, an artistic collective that produces graffiti-style artwork. Peko invited multiple artists from Lima to help illustrate the mural.

After the mural was completed, an inauguration ceremony was held, where the Japanese theme of Dragon Ball Z, Cha-La-Head-Cha-La, was played to any audience that had come to mourn Toriyama. Audience members could also been seen doing the Spirit Bomb technique by raising their hands over their heads.

The Death of Akira Toriyama

Akira Toriyama is renowned the world over thanks to creating the legendary Dragon Ball series. He also created Sand Land as well as Dr. Slump, the latter of which helped jumpstart the magaka’s career. Gamers also know him as the character designer of Blue Dragon, Chrono Trigger, and the Dragon Quest video games.

Toriyama passed away on March 1 this year due to an acute subdural hematoma and Bird Studio, his production company, announced his death one week later on March 8. Fans have made multiple tributes to the late creator, from holding vigils in video games like Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Dragon Quest 10, and Final Fantasy XIV, to illustrating Toriyama/his avatar and Dragon Ball characters in honor of him.

Before his passing, Toriyama had worked on Dragon Ball DAIMA, a new anime that sees the main cast of characters transformed into child versions of themselves due to a wish made to Shenron by two unknown antagonists. Toriyama said that he created the story, setting, and character designs and that Goku and his friends travel to an unknown and mysterious world and go on an adventure with plenty of intense action. Dragon Ball DAIMA is scheduled to air in the fall of 2024.

The Dragon Ball Super manga is scheduled to return in May after a hiatus following Toriyama’s death and will resume with chapter 104, with chapter 103 being the final chapter that Toriyama wrote. There has also been speculation regarding who will continue to storylines of Super. It is believed that Toyotarou, the longtime artist of Dragon Ball Super and Toriyama’s chosen successor, will take up both the writing and illustrating responsibilities or that he will be paired with a new writer who will continue Dragon Ball Super.
