Miley Cyrus’ Speech Snubs Dad, Billy Ray

Former Disney actress and now pop singer Miley Cyrus clinched her first and second Grammy for the categories best solo pop performance and record of the year for her hit song “Flowers” on Sunday, February 4. She had attended the star studded ceremony in the company of her mother Tish Cyrus, her sister Brandi and her boyfriend Maxx Morando. In her acceptance speech for record of the year, the Party In The USA singer thanked the entire recording process and team behind the song, Columbia Records, her mother and her sister, Brandi, while notably leaving out her father, Billy Ray and the rest of of siblings.

Cyrus thanked her mother Tish, her sister, her boyfriend, and her “main gays” for styling her look. “I don’t think I forgot anyone – but I might have forgotten underwear. Bye!” she told the audience before exiting the stage.

The next morning, on Feb. 5, Cyrus had another opportunity to acknowledge her father in a lengthy Instagram post but again didn’t.

“My lover, my momos, my friends, my collaborators, @kidharpoon @tylersamj @pollackmusic @aldaelong , every single person who made this song and album possible!” she wrote. “My team (a little extra love to the glam team), Bill Sobel who is my hero and doesn’t have Instagram so will probably never see this, Crush Music, Olivia + FANMADE, Ron Perry and all of Columbia records,” she wrote.

This fueled rumors of a rift within the Cyrus family, prompting fans to dig deeper into their messy past. Marriage To Divorce: A Timeline

The “Wrecking Ball” singer’s parents tied the knot in 1993, after two years of dating and a year after she was born, and were together for 30 years. They went on to have two more children – son Braison, who was born in 1994, and daughter Noah, who was born in 1999.

17 years later in 2010, Billy Ray filed for divorce, but dropped his claims a few months later. In 2013 Tish filed for divorce, but after couples therapy, the pair got back together. T The couple didn’t officially divorce till 11th of April, 2022. In August of next year, Tish went on to remarry actor Dominic Purcell. At the Malibu ceremony, only Miley and her half-sister Brandi were present.

“My whole life my mom has been behind the scenes,” Miley told Vogue. “She was always the one getting me ready for big days, starting with cheerleading competitions, then eventually on sets or backstage before a performance. She has never stopped celebrating me and has been so supportive of my decisions. I feel honored to be that person for her now that I’m older.”

“To see my mom this happy and in love is very emotional for me,” she added. “Dom and my mom share the sweetest, most genuine love. Noah and Braison had been spotted at Wal-Mart that very day, sparking waves of controversy. This was an early sign of a divide in the 6 Cyrus siblings.

In October, Billy, too, went on with his life and married an Australian musician known as Firerose. None of the kids had been there at the ceremony. Former Hannah Montana costars Miley and Billy Ray had also unfollowed each other on Instagram.

Tish Cyrus Reveals A ‘Disrespectful Marriage’

On February 7th of 2024, Tish Cyrus-Purcell’s episode of Call Her Daddy aired, in which she went into more detail about the ups and downs of life with Billy Ray, and why they broke up and got back together so many times.

“I think I did stay so long out of fear, literal fear of being alone,” she tells host Alex Cooper, according to Us Weekly. “I met [Billy Ray] when I [was] 24. So I, like, grew up…[and] he was such a huge part of that.”

She also revealed that during the pandemic the pair spent two years living apart, with the country singer in Tennessee while she stayed in Los Angeles. And during this time (August 2020), Cyrus-Purcell lost her mother, triggering “one month of a complete psychological breakdown. It was the worst thing…I could not eat. I could not sleep. I could not stop crying…I don’t have my mom and then I don’t have my husband [who’s] been my husband for 30 years.”

With the help of hindsight, and now being in a better marriage, she was no longer blind to the “disrespect” in her marriage to Billy Ray. “Honestly, on both our parts,” the mom of five said. Thankfully, her current situation is much better. She went on to say how much better her current situation was, and that “there’s not one second” that she felt disrespected by her husband.

Father-Daughter Dynamics

Miley has rarely spoken about her father in the years since, but she did speak out in August 2023 about how they view fame “wildly” differently.

“My dad grew up the opposite of me. I grew up on a soundstage in a house with a family that was super close and all lived under the same roof, and I grew up financially stable and emotionally stable. … That’s something that my dad didn’t have,” she said during her TikTok series, “Used To Be Young.””I do have a lot of great memories singing music with my dad and learning and watching his voice and the way that he’s using the instrument,” Miley said.”I will say that I feel vocally my dad was underappreciated,” she added.
