Developer Mega Crit revealed Slay the Spire 2, the sequel to the original Slay the Spire released back in 2017.

A trailer announcing the project was shown during the Triple III Initiative showcase and featured the Ironclad and the Silent, two characters who were playable in the original game. They were joined by a new character named the Necrobinder, who is “a wandering lich who seeks to bind the forgotten corpse” (what the hell does that even mean?). The Necrobinder can summon Osty, a literal skeletal hand in combat. Additionally, Neow (a magical whale from the first game) appears at the end, suggesting that she’ll return to her role of resurrecting the characters whenever they die.

The Steam store page for the game explains that it’s been 1,000 years since the first game took place and in that time, the titular spire is only now reopening its doors for any challengers. The spire has also changed, with new enemies, events, and treasures that players can stumble across. There will also be new ways to play, but Mega Crit has kept mum about those for the time being.

The game will be coming to Steam early access in 2025. The Steam page states that the original Slay the Spire succeeded because of players reporting issues, translating content/announcements, and creating video essays on the game. As such, the same strategy will be applied to the sequel. Slay the Spire 2 will also be using the Godot engine instead of the Unity engine, which was used while developing the first game.

What is Slay the Spire?

It isn’t the first deck-building roguelike game, but it’s certainly one of the best the genre has to offer. The original Slay the Spire launched in early access on Steam back in 2017, before evolving into a full release in 2019 and subsequently appearing on Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.

Four characters are available, each representing different ways of playing. There’s the Ironclad (your typical warrior), the Silent (a rogue and lover of poison), the Defect (an automaton who abuses elemental magic), and the Watcher (a blind monk who changes stances for certain benefits). Their objective is what’s on the tin: climb to the literal beating heart of the spire and destroy it to slay the spire.

Players will have access to an arsenal of cards benefiting the unique ability of each character and must fine-tune their deck by both acquiring and discarding certain cards to optimize their build. it isn’t known if either the Watcher or the Defect will return for the second outing, as Mega Crit hasn’t mentioned them. We will have to wait and see if they are included in the sequel.
