TMNT Splintered fate is dropping onto the Switch this July
A trailer (featuring some cheesy voiceover) was shown during the Nintendo Indie World showcase on Wednesday (April 17) and will involve the titular Turtles rescuing their rat sensei Splinter (hence the game’s name) from the Foot Clan and their leader, the Shredder. Other iconic TMNT villains like Leatherhead, Bebop, and Rocksteady will also act as bosses throughout the game.
Along with their signature weapons and colored bandanas, each Turtle will have a unique ability, like Raphael having a higher chance of landing critical hits, or Donatello having superior attack range. Players will be able to pick and choose a temporary power-up (more health, reduced cooldown on abilities, etc.) that will be lost whenever a run ends, as well as artifacts (permanent upgrades) that require currency collected during a run. It’s Hades, but green, reptilian, and has lots of pizza (delicious).
Four-player drop-in/drop-out co-op is also available if you have three die-hard TMNT fans in your life. TMNT Splintered Fate will be a timed console exclusive (thank god) and will be released onto the Nintendo Switch in July this year.
If you’ve never heard of this totally tubular terrapin title, I don’t blame you. This game was originally released back in 2023 for Apple Arcade, but it seems to have flown under the radar of many gamers. People online said they’ve enjoyed playing through developer Super Evil Megacorp’s game (yes, that’s their actual name), so it looks like this is a hidden gem.
Other TMNT games in the works
TMNT Splintered Fate isn’t the only upcoming game featuring the Heroes in a Half-Shell. There’s more pizza-fueled fun with TMNT Wrath of the Mutants, Mutants Unleashed, and The Last Ronin.
Wrath of the Mutants began life as an arcade game but is now coming to consoles and PC. It’s based on the 2012 TV series version of The Turtles and will include new stages and bosses, as well as newly recorded voice lines for the heroes. Like Splintered Fate, four-player co-op is also included and will be released later this month on April 23.
Mutants Unleashed is set after the TMNT Mutant Mayhem animated film and is a brawler/platformer hybrid. Each Turtle will be a special snowflake by having unique playstyles and abilities as they’ll encounter new mutants popping up in the Big Apple. Two-player co-op will be available and it’s coming to PC and all major consoles, with developer A Heartful of Games saying they are committing to a 2024 release.
Finally, The Last Ronin is a much darker game than the other entries and is basically the TMNT version of The Dark Knight Returns (a Batman comic where he returns to crime fighting in his old age). Three of the Turtles and Master Splinter have been murdered by the Foot Clan, who now control New York City. Not all is lost, however, as one Turtle still lives and breathes, wielding his brother’s weapons and is looking for bloody payback against the Foot Clan and Shredder.
The Last Ronin started as a comic miniseries and an additional miniseries, The Lost Years, revealed what lessons the Survivor Turtle learned while journeying to become stronger and avenge his brothers and master.
This brutal TMNT story is being brought to life by Black Forest Games, who said that the gameplay will be similar to the God of War games. So far, a teaser trailer was released back in 2023, hinting towards the Turtles being terminated by the Foot. As of writing, it’s not known what platforms The Last Ronin will come to, nor has a release date been given.
