The reveal trailer

It looks like Tom Henderson’s information was good. Earlier this month, the Insider Gaming writer wrote that a roguelite Prince of Persia game was being developed by Evil Empire, the same developer behind Dead Cells, another roguelite.

During the Triple III initiative showcase, a reveal trailer for The Rogue Prince of Persia was shown. It featured the protagonist battling with the Hun army (the enemy faction) whilst simultaneously rescuing a small child from them. As Henderson wrote in his article, the art style for the graphics takes inspiration from Franco-Belgian comics.

The Rogue Prince of Persia story

The Steam store page explains that the Hun army has been corrupted by “dark shamanic magic” and that as the Prince goes on his quest to stop them, he will find his place in the royal family. Players will interact with various characters on their journey and discover new areas through non-linear story progression. The game is described as being fast-paced, challenging yet accessible for players.

The developers wrote more information in a Steam post. They explain that the Prince was gifted a magical bola when he was a baby, which can resurrect him in the last safe place he was in before he died (isn’t that convenient?). Taking advantage of this ability, he managed to master his combat and acrobatic abilities. However, his recent actions have resulted in the Hun army gaining access to dark magic. The events of the game will test the Prince as he is forced to face his flaws and regain his family’s trust in him by saving both them and the people of his kingdom.

Gameplay

The Rogue Prince of Persia will feature the usual platforming abilities such as wall-running that the Prince will employ to avoid hazards as well as reach new areas. Combat will involve kicking and dodging enemies, with players being able to choose from an assortment of medallions and weapons to bring pain to the Huns. Like many other roguelites, levels are procedurally generated, but players will be able to change their loadouts mid-run to adapt to the challenges in their path. New weapons and trinkets can be found during runs to allow players to create specific builds.

The game will be released in early access on May 14, with Evil Empire saying they wanted to work with the player community to “create the best version of this game as we can.” Regular content updates (bosses, weapons, new areas, etc.) will be added to the game. Feedback will be received before and after each update to ensure that they are creating the best game possible. There will also be more information that will be released through Steam posts and YouTube videos on the official Evil Empire channel to answer any questions players may have.

This isn’t the only Prince of Persia game being worked on. There’s also the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake that was supposed to come out in 2021 but is now restarting development.
