Dragon Ball fans are eager to get their hands on Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, the latest entry in the Budokai Tenkaichi series that’s still in development. Until it drops, fans and gamers will have to settle for whatever small scraps of information V Jump magazine gives them.

This time, scans from V Jump magazine show two noteworthy things. The first is a focus on the latest generation of Saiyans, i.e., Goten, Trunks (child version), their fusion Gotenks, Kale, Caulifla, and their fusion Kefla (hey, those old geezers Kakarot and Vegeta don’t need to hog the spotlight and should share it). These next-gen warriors can be seen powered up to their Super Saiyan forms and unleashing their iconic attacks, such as Gotenks with his Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack and Kefla with her Gigantic Burst.

The second thing is characters being selected for a 5v5 match. Also called team battles, this was a feature that was added to Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and let you build a squad of five warriors who would duke it out against another five warriors until one team won. The image from V Jump shows Goten, Kale, Trunks, and Caulifla waiting for the fifth member of their team to be selected by the player as they wait in the World Martial Arts Tournament arena.

Fusions in past Budokai Tenkaichi games

Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and 3 both allowed characters to fuse mid-match, so the fact that Gotenks and Kefla are present here makes it all the more likely that that old mechanic could return in Sparking Zero. Vegeta and Goku are also going to be playable (they are the most recognizable Dragon Ball characters, after all) and though it hasn’t been confirmed as of writing, it wouldn’t be a big shock if both Saiyans fused to become Vegito and/or Gogeta and transformed into their Super Saiyan Blue form. Developer Spike Chunsoft hasn’t talked about bringing the fusion mechanic to the game, mind you.

Something else to consider is failing fusions. In the aforementioned entries, it was possible to fail a minigame during the fusion dance, resulting in characters like Gogeta and Gotenks becoming weak and fat versions of themselves as was seen in the anime and the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie. Additionally, players could also fuse into characters not previously seen, such as Gokule (a fusion of Goku and Hercule Satan) or Tiencha (a fusion of Tien Shinhan and Yamcha).

Given the large number of characters that are going to be playable in Sparking Zero, it’d be interesting to see if Spike Chunsoft allowed players to combine various characters and see what their fusion would look like. Just imagine Master Roshi and Beerus doing the fusion dance. Master Beeroshi would be hilarious and deadly (the perfect combination).
