Best games to play if you like the Fallout TV show

With all the rave reviews the Fallout TV show is getting and an upcoming second season, it’s understandable that people want to get into games similar to the show. If you’re someone who wants to experience games similar to the Fallout TV show, this is where Newzertainment comes in to help you out. Since both the Fallout TV show and the Fallout games deal with adventures out in post-apocalyptic wastelands filled with unsavory people and beasties alike, we’ve got a few games that fit this description.

1. Fallout New Vegas/3/4

Fallout New Vegas

Hey, there’s a reason as to why the Fallout TV show was made in the first place and that’s because the games are good and are beloved by fans. Can you blame me for recommending the source material?

Fallout New Vegas is usually said to be the best game in the series, though you can substitute this with Fallout 3 or Fallout 4 if you want. All of them do have this in common: they’re single-player first-person shooter RPGs where you wander through a radioactive wasteland to accomplish a main objective, which differs between each game. Aiding you are the attributes and perks you can increase/acquire to eventually become an nigh-unstoppable warrior, as well as some companions who’ll tag along for the ride and help out in fights.

2. Fallout 1 and 2/Atom RPG

fall out atom rpg

The original Fallout games are CRPGs (computer roleplaying games) and feature turn-based combat played from a zoomed-out view. They’re also a little old as both Fallout 1 and 2 came out towards the end of the 1990s. Like the later entries, they’ll see you adjusting your stats and acquiring perks to increase your odds of survival to accomplish your goal and bringing along companions to ensure you won’t be the first person to be attacked when entering a combat encounter with bandits or mutated animals.

Something akin to these two is Atom RPG. It’s very similar to the first two entries in the Fallout series, only Atom RPG is set in a version of Soviet Russia that experienced the destruction that only nuclear warheads can create, whereas all the Fallout games are set in an irradiated USA. Go with any of these if the previous entry isn’t your jam and you’re a bit more tactical.

3. Mad Max

Your legs are soon going to get tired from all the walking around you’ll do when it comes to surviving in a harsh desert wasteland. Why not drive in a tricked-out ride instead?

Time to get out of your (Thunder)dome with Mad Max. This is a prequel to the Fury Road movie where Max traverses an open-world wasteland in a souped-up car, carjacking rides belonging to different factions, blitzing through time trails, and unleashing hell upon whatever cars come into contact with you. Accompanying the car combat is the hand-to-hand style of combat the Batman Arkham series helped popularize as Max dishes out some brutal attacks to every enemy on-screen.

4. Borderlands

I know at least one of you reading this is a loot goblin and I’ve got something for you and your kind: the Borderlands series.

Taking place on the planet of Pandora (and other planets in later entries), Borderlands involves players going on an epic adventure while collecting the most valuable thing in life: guns!

Like RPGs, guns and other equipment have different stats (damage, ammo count, etc.) and are categorized by different tiers (from common to legendary). You’ll always be hogging the best guns and keeping them away from your amigos (Or taking all of them for yourself if you’re flying solo. Either way, you’re winning in the end.).

Start with either Borderlands Game of the Year Enhanced Edition or Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, which bundles Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel into one giant, cell-shaded package of loot and content you’ll sink plenty of hours into.

5. Metro Redux Collection

Just like The Handsome Collection, the Metro Redux Collection compiles two killer games (Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux) into an awesome double pack. A global nuclear holocaust has ravaged the world, Russia included. Humans survive by hiding in underground Metro stations and tunnels, while horrific abominations roam the surface, with irradiated air meaning humans can’t survive up there for long.

The Metro games are also survival horror, meaning you’ll need to be careful when it comes to using consumables, especially since a certain type of bullet is also used both as currency and as superior ammo for guns (big shocker regarding that second purpose). There’s plenty of darkness to hamper your vision and coupled with a breakable gas mask alongside sections where your gas mask is at risk of being destroyed can lead to a very tense journey.

6. The Outer Worlds

You know what connects Fallout New Vegas to The Outer Worlds? Both are made by the same developer, Obsidian Entertainment. Instead of traversing through a hot, radioactive wasteland, you’ll be out in space, dealing with a corrupt corporation that rules over a space colony’s inhabitants as well as trying to revive the passengers who came with you to start a new life among the stars.

Some DNA with New Vegas is shared, like having perks, attributes with points to spend and skills to unlock, and companions you can recruit to make situations, both in and out of combat, easier. If you enjoyed the first entry on this list and love the sci-fi genre as well, pick this up.

7. Horizon Zero Dawn

You know what’s cool? Dinosaurs and robots. You know what’s even cooler? ROBOT DINOSAURS. Just look at the Thunderjaw, one of Horizon Zero Dawn’s enemies, in the above picture and tell me that it looks lame. It’s a badass mecha T-Rex armed with lasers and explosive disc launchers, for God’s sake.

You’ll encounter all mechanical monsters as you guide Aloy through her journey across a world where humanity isn’t on top, the machines are. You’ll soon come to discover how and why these creatures were manufactured in the first place and become better at hunting them using your bow and arrows, alongside a few other tools at your disposal. You’ll earn plenty of levels and obtain useful upgrades to your equipment to eventually become the best robo-dino hunter in the land.
