Information on Alien Rogue Incursion

In the past, we’ve only seen xenomorphs in VR through Alien: Isolation, which let you plop a VR headset on and scream in fear as the titular Alien startled and killed you many times. That all changes with Alien Rogue Incursion, a brand new VR game that’s been announced as part of Alien Day 2024 (a day when the Aliens series is celebrated by fans).

The teaser doesn’t give away much information. It shows the Alien logo against the backdrop of outer space before the silhouette of a planet comes into view. A brief flash follows and a small silhouette of a human positioned in front of the gaping maw of a large xenomorph comes into view. The trailer then ends with it telling us the release window is the holiday season of this year and that it’s coming to MetaQuest 3, Steam, and PlayStation VR 2.

The game’s website states that this will be a VR-only, single-player experience with a brand-new story that’s being delivered by developer Survios, with the aim of “surrounding players within the terror of the Alien universe.”

What is Alien?

One of the classics of the horror genre, the Aliens series features various characters being forced to contend with the xenomorphs and their species, one of which (facehuggers) can impregnate hosts before they are subsequently killed by the xenomorph that is born from within their body as it escapes by bursting out of the human’s chest.

The first horrific encounter with the xenomorphs occurred in Alien, where a space crew lands on a planet filled with xenomorph eggs, but are soon stalked and picked off by the xenomorph. The only survivor is Ellen Ripley (and her cat Jonesy), who makes a return in the sequel film Aliens (it’s like Alien, but plural and with more xenomorphs), as well as in Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection.

Since this is a profitable film franchise owned by Disney, of course, there’s a new film on the way. Alien: Romulus is set to take place between Alien and Aliens, with the narrative following space colonists running into a xenomorph while scavenging an abandoned space station (What did you expect? It’s an Alien movie.). It’s being directed by Fede Álvarez and will star Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn, Isabela Merced, and Aileen Wu. Romulus will get a full theatrical release on August 16 later this year.

There have also been multiple Alien video games, including 2014’s Alien: Isolation, which allowed players to play in VR mode as well as by displaying the game on a monitor (you know, the usual way). Xenomorphs have also shown up in two Alien Vs. Predator movies, where they scrapped with the same extraterrestrial Arnold Schwarzenegger and his buddies took on in the 1987 Predator movie.

Since crossovers are very profitable, Ripley and the xenomorph have also shown up in other series, like Dead by Daylight, as a survivor and killer, respectively. The extraterrestrial horror has also squared off against and attempted to kill the likes of Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Judge Dredd, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and more. There’s also been a few Alien Vs. Predator games where you play through three campaigns: a Marine soldier, a xenomorph, and a Yautja (the Predator species name). A xenomorph and Yautja even showed up as DLC fighters in Mortal Kombat X. No, I’m not making that up.
