What year is Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 set in?

Warhorse Studios has announced that Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 (KCD 2) is in development and will drop by the end of 2024. Various developers as well as actors Tom McKay and Luke Dale (who played characters in the first game) appear to talk about the upcoming medieval life simulator and an IGN interview also revealed more information.

KCD 2 will pick up where the first game left off, with Henry of Skalitz continuing his mission of finding those responsible for the raid on his home village and the deaths of his parents. In the sequel, Henry (McKay) is the squire to a knight, Sir Hans (Dale), and both are sent on a mission, but things go very south, very quickly for the duo. Hans will be a positive influence on Henry, allowing the latter to become more cheerful and happy as the game progresses.

The story will be “longer and more epic” as the focus shifts to the issues kings deal with and will have higher stakes. It will also be “darker, deeper, and more cinematic,” and will test the player’s conscience with various plot twists and critical decisions at certain points. Henry will evolve from a man to a warrior in this game and will need help from his friends to get anywhere in his mission. KCD 2 will also be written to allow newcomers to jump right in without having to play the first game and will have over five hours of cutscenes.

The city of Kuttenberg will be the heart of KCD 2, with two areas being explorable: the natural Bohemian Paradise and the urban village of Kutná Hora (both areas being the approximate size of the first KCD game map). Warhorse told IGN that since Henry will be going to Kuttenberg, there will be people of different ethnicities who can be encountered. The studio is consulting their in-house historian, along with reenactors, universities, museums, historians, and experts from various ethnicities and religious beliefs to ensure their world is believable, realistic, and immersive. The city will also play a key role in Henry’s adventure, but Warhorse wouldn’t elaborate for spoilers reasons.

Lead designer Prokop Jirsa said that Henry can be shaped to the player’s liking, whether that be a scoundrel who enjoys stealing or a silver-tongued charmer who uses words to solve problems, as well as deciding whether to save or punish the world. NPCs will also react to how Henry behaves: for example, if a player commits crimes, Henry’s face will be branded to reflect that. If Henry manages to escape the scene of the crime before a guard arrives, skill checks will be tougher and NPCs will become more alert to find him.

There will also be a new “quick answer” feature that lets Henry give an immediate reply to someone without locking the player into a dialogue screen. A blacksmithing mini-game, referencing Henry’s background, will also be present. Like the first game, the combat will also be historically accurate for the period and players will need to fight as if their lives depend on it, though it will be made to be more accessible to newbies. Crossbows and early firearms will also be usable in KCD 2.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is being developed for the PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S, and will be released by the end of 2024.

What is Kingdom Come Deliverance?

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 system requirements

The original Kingdom Come Deliverance is the first game Warhorse Studios developed and follows Henry of Skalitz, the son and apprentice of a blacksmith. After his village is raided and his parents murdered right in front of his eyes, the blacksmith’s boy swears vengeance on those responsible for the crime and his subsequent journey sees him becoming a man. It’s a little like Batman, except it’s set in the 15th century and is far bloodier.

What made KCD stand out from other RPGs and made players fall in love with it is the fact that Henry (at least initially) is a nobody and does everything poorly, be it fighting, thieving, or haggling. But as the game progresses, Henry improves, gradually evolving from a helpless (and not literal) babe in the woods to a competent and skilled individual who can look after and defend himself. This isn’t a “chosen one” type of situation, where Henry is “destined to bring balance to The Force” or anything like that. He’s an ordinary guy who becomes a hardy and experienced person as he sees what the world is truly like.
