The story of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind
One series that almost no one expected to make an appearance at Summer Game Fest this year was Power Rangers. During the showcase, a new game called Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind was announced. It’s a beat ‘em up where the Rangers will need to, well, beat up a large number of Putty Patrollers and monsters created by villain Rita Repulsa’s servant Finster.
That’s not all, as a cyborg version of Rita called ‘Robo-Rita’ has appeared from the future to work with the present version of herself to destroy the Rangers. Both versions of the villainess will “rewind, rewrite, and remix the past” to try and stop the Power Rangers from being formed. This game will remix and respect the history of the Power Rangers by including scenarios and gameplay that will be “both familiar and new to MMPR fans.”
The gameplay of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind
The trailer showed the Rangers kicking ass using their martial arts skills to attack both Putties and monsters across various areas in their hometown of Angel Grove. Additional gameplay shows the teenagers with attitude will be participating in on-rail sequences where they’ll need to shoot at enemies and dodge projectiles while riding roller coasters, their Shark Cycles, and piloting their Zords. Five players will be able to fight together in both online and offline co-op.
A brief look at Megazord gameplay can also be seen where the Megazord is punching a giant monster. Cutscenes with an art style similar to a Saturday morning cartoon are also shown in the trailer. Interestingly, Tommy Oliver (the team’s Green and later White Ranger) wasn’t seen during the trailer. The other Rangers can be seen riding a roller coaster in cars that reflect their Ranger uniform color and an empty green car is present, so it’s more than likely that the Green Ranger will be playable. Tommy is the most popular Power Ranger, after all.
Eugene Evans, the senior vice president of Digital Strategy and Licensing at Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, said they were eager to work with Digital Eclipse to introduce Rita’s Rewind to PR fans. “We created Hasbro Retro Arcade to deliver a modern take on old-school arcade action based on our world-class brands and characters. This further illustrates our strategy to grow our digital games portfolio through licensing and internal development and we can’t wait for fans’ reactions when revisiting iconic moments through this new, yet retro, gameplay.”
Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind will be developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Hasbro Retro Arcade. Right now, you can wishlist the game on Steam and it’ll be teleporting onto consoles as well. An exact release date hasn’t been specified, but the game will be released in late 2024.
