Helldivers 2 PSN account link walked back by Sony, will not require PC players to link with PlayStation account, Helldivers happy and celebrating

Now that Sony admitted their mistake, Helldivers 2 players can go back shooting bugs and robots.

The roars of the Helldivers 2 community have been heard by Sony. Over on X (formerly Twitter), the official PlayStation X account wrote that they’ve “heard feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update” and that they will not be moving forward with having PC players link their accounts to a PlayStation Network (PSN) account. The post also read that they are “still learning what is best for PC players” and that the feedback (i.e., refunds and negative Steam reviews) has been invaluable to them.

If you’re out of the loop, Sony planned on making it mandatory for PC players to connect their profiles to a PSN account if they wanted to play Helldivers 2. This went about as poorly as one would expect, with plenty of outrage across the virtual world. Arrowhead Game Studios, the guys who made the ultra-patriotic shooter, encouraged players to get refunds on Steam and drop negative reviews so that they’d have more leverage in discussions with Sony.

From red to green and new cape requests

Speaking of Steam reviews, recent reviews were previously labeled as “overwhelmingly negative,” but are now labeled as “mixed” due to an influx of positive reviews following Sony’s change of plans, with the number of positive ones going past 100,000. The official Helldivers 2 Discord is celebrating this news too, with people encouraging others to turn their negative reviews into positive ones, as well as repeatedly posting gifs of the Helldiver salute to show their happiness.  There are even requests for a new cape with red stripes of varying lengths, referencing the Steam review statistics for Helldivers 2 during this time.

John Pilestedt, the Arrowhead CEO, wrote a post saying that he was “impressed by the @helldivers2 community and their ability to collaborate” and thanked PlayStation for making account linking an optional thing.

Before this announcement, Helldivers 2 was delisted from Steam in more than 170 countries that did not have PSN. So far, there hasn’t been any word regarding the game going back on sale in these countries. Even the PC port of Ghost of Tsushima is somewhat connected to all this. Developer Sucker Punch Studios confirmed that their game wouldn’t need a PSN account to play the game’s single-player mode, but would be needed for the Legends multiplayer mode.

It’s extremely rare to see so many people join forces with one another and work towards one objective like this, but that’s what the Helldivers 2 community is. A game managing to foster such a dedicated community in only three months of time is rather impressive.
