The Helldivers 2 Star Wars mod
There’s just something about serving a great empire that makes people want to side with and play as them. Since there isn’t a Star Wars version of Helldivers 2, the only way you can play as Clone Troopers from the Star Wars Clone Wars show is through mods on PC.
YouTuber ToastedShoes employed his mod team (modders Kboy and irastris) to create a Star Wars Clone Wars mod for Arrowhead’s ultra-patriotic game. The mod does exactly what it says on the tin: everything looks as though it came from Star Wars. Helldivers look like major Clone Trooper characters, Rex, Cody, and Hunter, and their ships resemble imperial star destroyers, automatons look like B1 battle droids (the ones that go “roger, roger”) droidekas, DT sentry droids and spider droids, and the Pelican extraction airship instead looks like a Republic gunship.
Toastedshoes showed this mod in action by way of a YouTube video where he and three other YouTubers (BattlefrontUpdates, TheOzzyJedi, and Bombastic) played as the Clone Troopers and completed various assignments that pitted them against the Separatist droids. Some comments under the video didn’t like the fact that the mod is locked behind Toastedshoes’ Patreon and that there wasn’t any link to the mod itself, though the mod hasn’t been made available on his Patreon as of writing.
This type of video fits in with Toastedshoes’ MO. Previous videos of his include inserting Disney’s Phineas and Ferb into Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, turning CatNap from Poppy Playtime into Garfield, and putting various Disney characters into Mortal Kombat (if you’ve ever wanted the stab the hell out of Winnie the Pooh, you can now). Like with the Star Wars mod, these mods are locked behind his Patreon, with the $5 tier giving you access to his mod launcher.
What is Star Wars: The Clone Wars?
Remember back in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope when Luke asked Obi-Wan if he’d fought in the Clone Wars? This show is what the young Skywalker was referring to.
Sandwiched between Episode II and Episode III of Star Wars, The Clone Wars see the Galactic Republic (which includes the Jedi and the Clone Troopers) fighting in a galactic war with the Separatist Army. This conflict was started because the Separatists weren’t happy with the Republic since they felt the Republic wasn’t treating them fairly, with problems like sky-high taxes and a useless government making the Separatists loathe them.
However, what people don’t know is that Sheev Palpatine (AKA Sith Lord Darth Sidious) was the real puppet master behind the Clone Wars since he controlled both sides of the conflict. This was all one big ploy to wipe out the Jedi and ensure the Sith would rule the galaxy (hey, Sith and Jedi aren’t exactly friends, remember?). He made this happen when the Republic won against the Separatists in Episode III. Shortly after, he kicked off Order 66, a plan where Clone Troopers purged all Jedi, though some managed to slip through their grasp and live (ain’t that convenient?).
The Clone Wars has a total of seven(!) seasons and introduces characters like Jedi Ahsoka Tano and bounty hunter Cad Bane, who people adore and for good reason. It also made Anakin Skywalker much more likable since Hayden Christensen’s wooden acting in the aforementioned Episodes wasn’t exactly top-notch (remember the part where he said he hates sand to Padmé?).
