The Joker in Multiversus

I suppose it was only a matter of time before the Jester of Genocide made an appearance in Multiversus. After all, wherever Batman goes, the Joker can’t be far behind.

A teaser trailer for Joker’s Multiversus debut sees DC’s greatest cash cow character (Batman) walking past Bugs Bunny, Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, and Anya Stark from Game of Thrones, all of whom are looking worse for wear (hey, the Joker’s a lot stronger and more dangerous than you think he is). He walks into the Batcave and stops to see the Clown Prince of Crime walk out from a green haze. Joker tosses a rocket launcher to the floor and says he and the Caped Crusader need to stop meeting like this, before cackling at his own quip. The trailer ends with the Joker saying “Wait till they get a load of me!” before rushing towards the screen.

The voice of Batman’s arch-enemy here belongs to Mark Hamill. If that name rings a bell, it should. He’s the same voice actor who voiced the homicidal clown in Batman: The Animated Series as well as in Rocksteady’s Batman Arkham trilogy of games, along with a few other appearances of the Clown Prince of Crime. Oh, and he also played Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars movies. Kevin Conroy (Batman’s voice actor for this game and other media involving Hamill’s Joker) voiced Gotham’s vengeful son in this game before he passed away, so it makes sense that Hamill would follow suit and voice the Harlequin of Hate in this game.

An X (formerly Twitter) post from the official Multiversus account mentions three of the Joker’s moves. One of his attacks involves throwing playing cards that cycle through three different effects, while the other sees Joker shooting rockets with the aforementioned rocket launcher, which can also be charged for more damage. The last one involves Joker swinging a crowbar upwards, which can also be charged (hope Jason Todd doesn’t make it into this game down the line).

The Joker is a mage-class character, who fights from a distance by way of projectile attacks and using traps. Images and videos of Mistah J cracking jokes and and kicking ass have also been uploaded to X now that he’s confirmed to be a playable character.

Earlier on May 8, the Multiversus X account posted an image of a present with a lock on it. The post encouraged players to join their Discord and solve clues related to the contents within said present. Less than 24 hours later, the Joker was revealed after players solved all the clues thrown their way.

What is Multiversus?

Have you ever heard of Super Smash Bros.? It’s a fighting game series where you need to knock your opponent off of a stage multiple times before you can win. You can also play as a whole bunch of characters, from Bayonetta and Solid Snake to Mario and Mega Man. That’s basically what Multiversus is; it’s a Smash clone but with characters from franchises that are owned by Warner Brothers.

The likes of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman can team up/fight against other characters like Rick and Morty, Tom and Jerry, Finn and Jake from Adventure Time, and even bonafide celebrities like LeBron James (the Space Jam movies involved a whole bunch of Looney Tunes characters, so him showing up here makes sense). Each character fits a certain class (bruiser, assassin, tank, mage, and support), thus having a different playstyle.

Multiversus launched in open beta form back in 2022, but in 2023, it was taken offline due to developer Player First Games wanting to prepare the game for its full launch on May 28 later this month. Multiversus was previously playable on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One (sorry Nintendo Switch owners) and the game will soon be available on those platforms once again.
